Ok, so this is my first review and I thought I'd start with one of my favourites earlier Family Guy episodes, "The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire".
The Griffins and their friends all gather together on a cruise for a party. A small fishing incident leads to Quagmire wedging his hand into Cleveland's wife, Loretta Brown''s...uh...bust. Thus began the flirting which was all the more amusing when Cleveland enters the scene and innocently says, "Hi, Quagmire."
Wasn't Cleveland just adorably fantastic before he left to get his own show?
So Quagmire ends up sleeping with Loretta. Unfortunately Peter and Brian catch them in the act, though Peter does not see Quagmire's face. Peter tells everyone about loretta's infidelity with the man with the "tattoo on his left butt cheek". Quagmire clearly feels bad but does not say anything until one day, Peter notices the tattoo on his butt. Although promising not to tell Cleveland, Peter does so anyway and helps Cleveland to finally grow some balls to strike back. The ending fight is what makes this episode fantastic in my opinion! Cleveland charging around Quagmire's house with a baseball bats whilst beds spring out from every crevice and wall.
In the end, Cleveland finds his docile self again and forgives Quagmire, but decides to file for a divorce.
To be honest, I have enjoyed all of Season 4 but this episode in particular, should be hailed as a Family Guy classic. It's got the controversial "You Have Aids" song and Peter even sings "Rock Lobster", which I wish I could extend and listen to again and again! What I also love about this episode is the revolvement around the Quagmire and Cleveland friendship. Ever since I watched this episode, I've always smiled when I see Quagmire and Cleveland together. This episode just proves the strength of their friendship.
As for funny cutaways. One of my favourites had to be when Quagmire alludes to the good times he shared with Cleveland, and we get both guys dressed up in ridiculous tarten 80s clothes, boogying in the laundrette with czech accents. I didn't get the reference but that really didn't matter! Another cutaway I liked was Quagmire imitating Bill Clinton (in the presidential seat) and apologizing to the nation for "gi-googiting" a girl.
The Aids song...In all honesty, the lyrics were not that funny. I was mainly laughing at the fact that Peter was huge in comparison to his fellow singers. Seriously, it is a funny sight.
Adam West makes an appearance to make the episode even better as he usually does with any Family Guy episode. I have to admit, I intially disliked the random absurdity of Adam West humour. Then again, this was my opinion when I first started watching Family Guy. Watch a few episodes and you learn to love the guy and wish he were your brother or that funny uncle you've always wanted. Quagmire's terrified face whilst Adam West laughs manically over the word "boner" is awesome and never fails to get a chuckle out of me.
So, I'd give this episode an A. It explores the essential character traits of Peter (his stupidity), Quagmire (his giggity-giggity libido) and Cleveland (his loveable docility) and uses these traits to create a coherant storyline, which culminates with a brilliantly animated fight scene. Though I don't like the Aids song, it was a song that was partly responsible for Family Guy's rise to fame so I kind of feel I have to give it credit for that. The reconciliation between Quagmire and Cleveland is actually heart-warming, and these kinds of scenes can be hard to find in Family Guy! Lastly, all I can say is, Adam West.
